In the middle of an exhausting and vexing week (I got my computer hacked – not a whole lot of damage done, but the clean-up is miserable), good news.
For years I’ve been a fan of Big
Finish Audio Adventures of Dr. Who – licensed from the BBC to do audio
adventures, with previous Doctors. (Now in his 90s, on audio Tom Baker still
looks like he did in 1976). In some cases, wonderful voice-actors have stepped
in, who can do perfect imitations of previous Doctors (and previous companions)
now deceased. About 5 years ago, I wrote an audio script for the so-called “Companion
Chronicles” niche of Big Finish, stories centering on – and narrated by – one
or another of the Doctor’s companions. These aren’t full-cast audios, but with
a limited cast; in this case, both the First Doctor (William Hartnell) and the
Brigadier (one of the Doctor’s oldest Earth-dweller friends, played on TV by
the delightful Nicholas Courtney), now both deceased, are filled in for by
EXCELLENT stand-ins Stephen Noonan and Jon Culshaw.
Now, finally, “The Kraken of
Hagwell” is scheduled for release in February, from Big Finish. As far as I
know, it will be possible to buy this adventure in download form, and as an
audio CD, something I personally really appreciate. (In addition to continuing full-cast
audio adventures from Tom Baker, Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, et. al,
they’ve done further adventures of Doctors who were one-offs on-screen – Paul McGann
and, to my delight, Sir John Hurt!) (To say nothing of companions Katy Manning
(Jo Grant), Frazier Hines (Jamie McCrimmon), Lalla Ward (Romana #2), Louise
Jameson (Leela) and others… And Sir Derek Jacobi continuing the adventures of
his version of The Master!)
They also do many other series of
audio adventures: Sherlock Holmes, Blake’s Seven, and others, enough to keep
you hemorrhaging money for the foreseeable future.
So if you’re a Who fan and like
audio adventures (and the production values are really fine), go to the Big Finish website
(if I posted the address they automatically put in a picture I don’t want) -
and if you’re curious about the story I wrote for the Who-Universe, type “Kraken
of Hagwell” in “Search.” It will, as I said, be out in February.
